Autodesk's modeling, animation and rendering software has established its credentials as a serious production tool for film and video artists, game developers, design visualization professionals and graphic artists. Version 8.5, available for Mac, Linux and Windows (32 and 64 bit) users in Complete or Unlimited versions, simply piles on more functionality.
Notable is a new way to control cloth, via Maya nCloth (available in Maya Unlimited). This is the first module built on Autodesk’s new Nucleus technology, providing the ability to direct and control cloth and other material simulations in new ways, whether stiff, viscous or flowing. The ability to create cloth-on-cloth simulations—such as a shirt over pants—or create deformable plastic and metal simulations, or inflatable objects, opens up a new world of possibilities.
Coders will appreciate the possibility of using Python—a popular scripting language—within Maya, which can also be used for plugin development. New physical sun and sky shaders are said to let users create photorealistic skies based on the position of the sun, with new architectural and design shaders making it easier to create such effects as waxy floors, frosted glass, clay and sand-blasted metals. High dynamic range (HDR) images can now also be generated from the mental ray batch bake option, the Transfer Map feature, or the texture bakeSet node
